The Challenge

In Canberra’s quiet suburbs, Tanya was entering a new and exciting stage of life. With her children grown and living out of town, she and her husband were looking forward to spending more time on the road, exploring Australia in their campervan. While home was still important, giving them a place to return to and enjoy between trips, they no longer needed a backyard that revolved around kids or weekend upkeep.
The wide stretch of lawn behind their house had served its purpose well over the years. It was simple, open and easy to use, but as their priorities shifted, so did Tanya’s vision for the space. She wanted a backyard that reflected the freedom and simplicity they were gearing toward; something low-maintenance, environmentally responsible and able to take care of itself while they were off discovering new places.
What Tanya hoped to create wasn’t just a neater backyard; it was a space designed to support their lifestyle and values, while still feeling connected to the home they loved.
The lawn, though familiar and open, had become a burden. Weekly mowing and garden upkeep felt unnecessary, especially when they longed to be away discovering the coastline, national parks and small towns across the country. More than the time it took, it was the sense of being tied to something they no longer needed that made Tanya rethink the space.
There was also a practical issue. The backyard was flat, and whenever it rained, water tended to collect close to the house. It wasn’t flooding, but the lingering moisture near the brickwork raised concerns. Tanya wanted to avoid any future damage, especially if they were away for long periods of time.
As someone who cared deeply about sustainability, Tanya also approached the project with a long view. She didn’t want to use materials that would become waste down the line. With 90 square metres to cover, she needed something durable, weather-resistant, and circular in its lifecycle. If they ever decided to move, it was important to her that the surface could be removed, reused, recycled, or easily returned to lawn if the next owners preferred grass.
The Solution

After exploring her options and speaking with Tempo Landscapes Canberra, Tanya chose the PebbleLock permeable paving system. It ticked all the right boxes. It was made from 100 percent recycled plastic, designed to be fully recyclable, and able to handle Australia’s shifting weather conditions with ease.
The PebbleLock paver design meant water could pass directly through its structure and into the ground below, rather than pooling on the surface or running off uncontrollably. It was a simple yet effective way to manage stormwater naturally. Tempo Landscapes enhanced this by installing a discreet drainage system underneath, directing rainwater away from the house and into proper channels, stylishly solving a problem that had nagged at Tanya for years.
Installation was smooth and efficient. The PebbleLock pavers were laid over a prepared base, then shaped easily to fit the space. Offcuts were used in other parts of the yard to minimise waste, with those unused offcuts simply put out in the recycling bin. Once the pavers were in place, Tanya filled them with natural-coloured stones. The stone was simply raked into the cells, giving a refined, pebbled surface with the structure and strength to last.
Beyond the technical benefits, Tanya appreciated the way PebbleLock helped create a cooler outdoor environment. Unlike solid paving, which traps and radiates heat, the permeable design and natural fill helped keep air temperatures down, creating a space that was not only functional but more comfortable during Canberra’s hot summers.
The Result

Tanya’s new patio now surrounds the back of her house with a clean, natural appearance. The stone fill works well with the existing brick and stone features in the yard, creating a cohesive and understated look. More importantly, the area functions exactly as she had hoped. Water no longer collects near the house, the garden no longer requires constant attention, and she and her husband can leave for their travels without worrying about returning to an overgrown or waterlogged yard.
For Tanya, the project was never just about aesthetics. It was about creating a space that worked with their lifestyle and values, offering a functional, low-maintenance and environmentally sound backyard. PebbleLock allowed her to do that in a way that felt responsible and forward-thinking.
Now, as they prepare for their next road trip, the backyard stands as a quiet success: well-designed, low effort, and built with the future in mind.
